What was it like in your family growing up? How were emotions handled? How are your relationships now? Like many, if not most people, you probably wish it could be different in at least some crucial ways. It’s very puzzling that even the most well intentioned and loving family members or partners just don’t behave in the ways we need. And, often, somehow, no matter how hard we sincerely try, what we do and feel, just doesn’t bring the response we want. Often, we don’t even know exactly why things got so painful and unhappy. What I can offer is a balance of listening and offering tools for you to develop the relationships and effective and satisfying daily life you are wanting. One method that I use is Schema therapy for discovering and transforming deeply held beliefs and patterns of behavior. I also include Gottman and EFT couples methods. The Interpersonal Neurobiology concepts of Dr. Daniel Siegel also inform my sessions. Additionally, I practice Hakomi experiential and mindful therapy principles such as supporting your organic inner wisdom toward healing. Call for free initial consultation.

Olivia Thrift
Location: California, UK

Email: olivia@thepsychologycompany.co.uk, droliviathrift@gmail.com
Website: thepsychologycompany.co.uk
Dr. Olivia Thrift is a licensed Psychologist in both California and the UK and an advanced certified schema therapist and supervisor with the International Society of Schema Therapy. Olivia offers both in person and online psychological therapy and her practice is based in San Anselmo, Marin. Olivia also founded The Psychology Company which is a private practice in the UK which she continues to oversee. Olivia specializes in Schema Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy, is a certified Mindfulness and Yoga teacher and is also trained in DBT and CBT.
Olivia works with adults and specializes in working with clients who experience chronic emotional or interpersonal issues and have experienced attachment difficulties growing up. This can include;
- Physical/verbal/sexual/emotional abuse
- Growing up in invalidating/critical/emotionally dismissive family environments
- Growing up in an over-controlling environment where you were not free to be expressive, play or make mistakes
- Growing up witnessing significant and/or frequent parental conflict/domestic violence.
- Growing up with a family member who was addicted to alcohol and/or drugs.
- Growing up with a family member who had volatile moods and/or angry outbursts.
- Growing up with a family member who was depressed or experienced mental health problems.
- Growing up with a family member who themselves experienced attachment/relational trauma as a child which went untreated.
- Losing a parent/sibling/someone very close to you whilst growing up.
- Experiencing parental divorce.
- Having difficult experiences at school including going to boarding school, bullying and feeling different and/or ostracized from peers.
Olivia also has a special interest in working with adults who experienced childhood emotional neglect. Childhood emotional neglect refers to a situation in which a child’s emotional needs were consistently unmet, ignored, or disregarded by their caregivers. It’s not necessarily about abusive or overtly harmful actions; rather, it’s often about what’s missing—emotional responsiveness, validation, and support that children require for healthy emotional development.
Olivia also specializes in Enmeshment. Enmeshment refers to a dysfunctional relational pattern where boundaries between individuals are blurred or non-existent. There is also an over reliance on a child for emotional support and children in enmeshed relationships with their parents may find themselves suppressing their own feelings and aspirations in favor of maintaining the other person’s wellbeing. Enmeshment can lead to a lack of autonomy and individuality, for example people might struggle to make independent choices or feel guilty when asserting their own needs, fearing it will upset or disappoint the other person. Olivia believes a strong therapeutic relationship combined with evidenced based structured therapy is imperative in helping people make the changes they desire. Olivia is an active participant in therapy sessions which is different from some more passive approaches.

Paul is a clinical social worker with extensive experience providing psychotherapy to adults, adolescents, families and groups. Paul was drawn to Schema Therapy after specializing for several years in PTSD and other forms of trauma. Paul discovered in his work that a significant proportion of clients did not respond fully to traditional therapies for trauma. He noticed that many of these clients experienced insecure attachments to caregivers during childhood, leading to the development of problematic schemas and self-defeating life patterns, which exacerbated subsequent trauma reactions. These observations led Paul to Schema Therapy as an effective way to identify and resolve unmet childhood needs—and more effectively resolve trauma and other hard-to-treat conditions. Paul completed advanced certification training in Schema Therapy at the NJ Institute for Schema Therapy and is an Advanced Certified Schema Therapist. Paul is also trained in Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), and Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Bowen Family Systems Therapy.

I am a highly interactive therapist, not a head nodder. I am an Advanced Certified Schema Therapist and Schema Therapy supervisor. In addition to ST, I use mindfulness-based therapy in my practice. Consider the messages you learned from your family growing up, and how those life lessons found their way into the way you view the world. How do they inform the way you see yourself in the world? What is their impact on how you connect to others in relationships?
Schema therapy helps us uncover deeply held beliefs about others and the world that may be causing us to repeat unhelpful patterns of behavior. Repeating these patterns can cause us to feel a myriad of negative feelings- confusion, frustration, and loneliness. I aim to create a warm, empathic and caring relationship that allows you to feel heard and understood, which is vital for personal transformation and growth.
Aside from Schema therapy, I have a background in psychodynamic psychotherapies, cognitive-behavioral strategies, family systems theory, and emotionally focused couples therapy (EFT). It takes tremendous courage to begin this journey of discovery, and I am right beside you along the way. I offer in-person and telehealth sessions.

I am a licensed mental health counselor and advanced certified schema therapist in private practice in Seattle, Washington. I bring a creative and no-nonsense problem-solving approach to therapy. This comes from a diverse work experience as a mental health practitioner, aerospace engineer, and independent professional artist. My main areas of focus are anxiety, depression and anger. I don’t just sit, listen and nod. We talk. I actively engage you in the therapeutic process to help you make the real, permanent changes you want in your life. I won’t encourage you to merely “think positive.” Most of us have already tried that and it usually leaves us frustrated and more discouraged. Figuring out why you are the way you are can be interesting and even enlightening, but it’s worthless if you’re still experiencing the same emotional pain. I work with you to make changes in your life that you want to make. Things don’t have to stay the same.

Client Testimonial: “The whole experience was really enlightening and different from anything I had done before. I found any other therapy I had quite painful, tiring and never ending. You made me feel much better and happier about myself. You also made things feel achievable and within reach. It all seemed much clearer. Initially it just made me feel better when I was here but very quickly I could see and feel progress creeping into my life. Now I can see with hindsight how much it has changed my life.” Erika.

Olivia Thrift
Location: California, UK
Phone: (650) 447-5640
Olivia works with adults and specializes in working with clients who experience chronic emotional or interpersonal issues and have experienced attachment difficulties growing up. This can include;
